Shiva is one of the three main Gods in Hinduism. Shiva is known as the destroyer God because he removes all evil from the world. His wife is the goddess Parvati. He has a blue neck because, according to Hindu legend, he swallowed a poison in order to save the universe. He has three eyes, the third eye is on his forehead. Shiva is one third of the Hindu trinity including Brahma and Vishnu. Lord Shiva lives in the Himalayas. Ganesh and Kartikeya are his sons.

Shiva and Parvati are held up as the perfect example of marital bliss by many Hindus, and one is rarely depicted without the other.

Shiva represents contrasting values both lust and purity, peace and destruction. When depicted together with his wife, Parvati, he represents the union of male and female and marital fidelity. Hindus believe Shiva and Parvati live in the Kailash mountains in the Himalayas.

Size: 20" x 16"

This print has gone through many monsoons (with months of humidity), so it may have some staining and discoloration, along with some marks, that come with daily use and age.

In the period following independence in 1947 in India, the religious print business in India grew dramatically in its scale and diversity. All the prints I import from India are from this era and are a lot more colorful and bold in comparison to the very early prints in the late 1800's.
